The British Freediving Association (BFA) was set up in 1999 to represent the sport of freediving in the UK. The objectives of the BFA are to promote freediving – both competitively and recreationally – and to encourage the safe practice of the sport. In addition, we are the sole body that selects teams for international competitions and ratifies any UK record attempts according to the rules specified by AIDA UK.
The BFA is the UK representative of the Association Internationale pour le Développement de l’Apnée (AIDA), in English – the International Association for the Development of Apnea. Every year, the BFA pays an annual subscription of about EUR100 to AIDA International to fund their activities. AIDA International’s statute states that their goals are:
- the development of freediving in all countries
- the organisation of international meetings and competitions
- the standardisation of regulations in regard to education, competitions and records
- the assurance of cross-border communication of practising members
- the development of a system of reciprocity for various existing forms of education
- the recognition and registration of records and achievements for the various disciplines of freediving.
